Veterans croquet tourney hosted

Dave Murdoch

If you noticed quite a number of outsiders in Dannevirke from Wednesday-Sunday, November 3-7 odds on they would have been croquet players or showjumping personnel. Dannevirke’s Rangitira Club hosted the Central Regions Veterans Croquet Tournament from Wednesday starting with 24 players in traditional Association Croquet followed by 38 players in Golf Croquet from Friday-Sunday. They came from all over the southern North Island and even Gisborne, a car load of four leaving their flooded city in the hope of some croquet in Dannevirke, checking it was still on and totally enjoying “a brilliant tournament” in their words. Dannevirke received just the outer drizzle from that storm which persisted most days from Friday — temperatures were mild, wind nil and at no time did showers stop play. Visitors pronounced the lawns immaculate, praising Ian Power for all his work in preparing them, hospitality marvellous due to the hardworking committee and organisation from Feilding’s Michael Hardman superb. He recently received a commendation from Croquet NZ for his contribution to croquet — richly deserved. A bevvy of local players competed, president of Rangitira Delwynne Hall teaming up with veteran Peter Kelly to win the Handicap Golf Croquet doubles Division Two after six games on Friday. They were in auspicious company because playing for the first time in two years and only three months since a hip replacement was veteran and former NZ representative player Don Reyland who was National Association Croquet Champion in 1989 and represented New Zealand in Egypt and South Africa in the next few years. Despite being a little rusty he took several scalps in the competition. The tournament started with a great win in the Open Association Croquet Singles by Rangatira member but Ongaonga resident Steve Jones from Dennis Bulloch of Rose Gardens in Palmerston North.
